In the United States, test requirements vary heavily by institution. Ivy League universities and top private research centers strictly require an overall band of 7.5 or 7.0.
Sub-scores are critical. If you have an overall 7.5 but a 5.5 in writing, many graduate programs will require you to take ESL remedial courses or deny admission.
Canada is highly standardized. The general benchmark for undergraduate programs at top Canadian schools (U of T, McGill, UBC) is 6.5 overall with no band lower than 6.0.
For student visas under the Student Direct Stream (SDS), IRCC strictly mandates an IELTS Academic score of 6.0 in each section, making it the default prep target for most Canadian candidates.
Many Computer Science Graduate programs (especially Master's and PhD programs) require teaching or research assistantships (TAs/RAs) as part of their funding package.
