How to Use IELTS Mock Tests Effectively

Simply completing a mock test without a structured review process rarely improves your score. Research on test preparation shows that deliberate analysis of mistakes — not just repetition — is what drives band-score gains.

  1. 1

    Simulate real exam conditions

Sit at a desk, remove distractions, start the timer, and do not pause. Knowing how you perform under pressure is the whole point.

  2. 2

    Score and categorise your errors

After marking, group wrong answers by type: vocabulary gap, time pressure, misread instruction, or genuine knowledge gap. Each has a different fix.

  3. 3

Study the reasoning, not just the answer

For Reading and Listening, re-read the passage section that contains the answer. Understand why each distractor is wrong — this builds pattern recognition.

  4. 4

Review Writing against the four criteria

IELTS Writing is scored on Task Achievement, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Identify which criterion costs you the most marks.

  5. 5

Retake in 2–3 weeks, not the next day

Space out your mock tests to allow time for targeted practice between sittings. Cramming back-to-back tests without targeted work produces diminishing returns.

Common Mistakes That Cost Candidates Marks

Listening

Writing answers during the recording instead of using the 30-second preview time to predict word types and context.

Reading

Reading every word of the passage before looking at questions. Skim first, then search for specific answers.

Writing

Spending more than 20 minutes on Task 1. Task 2 carries double the marks — allocate your time accordingly.

Speaking

Giving short, rehearsed answers. Examiners reward spontaneity and the ability to develop ideas naturally.

IELTS Writing Scoring Criteria Explained

Task Achievement / Task Response

25%

Does your essay fully address all parts of the task? For Task 1, have you accurately described the main trends? For Task 2, have you presented a clear position supported by relevant ideas?

Coherence & Cohesion

25%

Is your essay logically organised with a clear progression of ideas? Do you use cohesive devices (linking words, pronouns) accurately without over-relying on them?

Lexical Resource

25%

Do you use a wide range of vocabulary with precision and natural collocation? Minor spelling errors are penalised lightly; systematic errors reduce your score significantly.

Grammatical Range & Accuracy

25%

Do you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures accurately? A single complex sentence used correctly can demonstrate more range than ten simple ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IELTS mock tests and practice tests.

Are the IELTS mock tests on Langogh free?
Yes — IELTS Mock Test 1 (Academic) is completely free. You can start immediately without a credit card. Additional tests (Mock Test 2 and 3) require a free account upgrade to access.
How is the Langogh IELTS mock test different from the real exam?
Our mock tests replicate the official IELTS format: same number of questions, same time limits, and the same question types used by IDP and British Council. The interface closely mirrors the IELTS computer-delivered test so you feel prepared on test day.
Do I get my band score immediately after the mock test?
Listening and Reading scores are calculated instantly. Writing and Speaking use our AI grading engine to return a detailed band-score breakdown — usually within seconds of submission.
Can I take an IELTS General Training mock test?
Yes. Langogh offers both Academic and General Training mock tests. General Training tests include the correct reading passages (everyday and workplace texts) and the formal/informal letter for Writing Task 1.
What is the difference between an IELTS mock test and an IELTS practice test?
In everyday usage the terms are interchangeable. A mock test typically refers to a full-length, timed simulation of the real exam (all 4 skills). A practice test can mean section-level exercises or shorter drills. On Langogh, our Mock Tests are full-length simulations, while Practice Tests include targeted skill exercises.
What score do I need to pass the IELTS?
IELTS has no pass or fail — it awards a band score from 1 to 9. Your target score depends on your goal: universities typically require 6.0–7.5, Canadian immigration often needs 6.0–8.0, and professional registration (nursing, medicine) may require 7.0–8.0 in each band.
