Academic Task 1

Visual Types You Must Master

Each type of visual requires a slightly different approach. Click any to get a full strategy guide and sample answer.

Bar / Column Chart

"Focus on the most significant trends and comparisons. Don't describe every bar."

Line Graph

"Describe overall trends first (rising/falling/stable), then highlight key data points."

Table

"Summarise the most significant rows/columns. You don't need to mention every figure."

Map / Process Diagram

"Use passive voice for processes (e.g., 'The mixture is heated'). Describe stages in order."

Paragraph Blueprint

The Perfect Task 1 Structure

Every high-scoring Task 1 response follows this four-paragraph framework.

P1
~40 words

Introduction

Paraphrase the prompt. State what the visual shows WITHOUT including any data figures.

P2
~50 words

Overview

Write 2-3 key trends or comparisons that stand out. This is the most important paragraph for your score.

P3
~60 words

Body Paragraph 1

Group and compare the most notable data points with specific figures from the visual.

P4
~50 words

Body Paragraph 2

Describe the next most significant group or trend with supporting data.

5 Critical Rules

Mastering Band 8.0+

Always include an 'Overview' paragraph - this is the #1 reason candidates lose marks.

Select 3-4 key features, NOT every data point in the visual.

Use precise language: 'approximately', 'roughly', 'peaked at', 'fell sharply'.

Never give your opinion. Task 1 is purely descriptive - no 'I think' or 'This shows that'.

Check your word count: 150+ words is required. Aim for 165-180.

The #1 mistake: Writing a conclusion instead of an overview. Examiners reward the Overview highly under 'Task Achievement'. Without it, you cannot score above Band 5 for that criterion.

5 Question Formats

Recognize Each IELTS Format

Misidentifying the essay type is a Task Response failure. Know each format before test day.

Opinion / Agree or Disagree

"State your clear opinion in the introduction. Do not sit on the fence."

Discussion (Both Views)

"Present both sides fairly, then give your own view in the conclusion."

Problem & Solution

"Identify and explain causes/problems, then propose realistic, specific solutions."

Advantages & Disadvantages

"You may or may not be asked for your opinion - read the question carefully."

Double Question

"There are TWO separate questions. Answer BOTH fully or you lose Task Response marks."

Essay Blueprint

The 4-Paragraph Formula

Every high-scoring Task 2 essay follows this structure. Internalize it before exam day.

P1
~50 words

Introduction

Paraphrase the prompt. State your overall position (thesis statement). Do not discuss your points yet.

P2
~90 words

Body Paragraph 1

Topic sentence → Main idea 1 → Explanation/Reason → Example → Mini-conclusion.

P3
~90 words

Body Paragraph 2

Topic sentence → Main idea 2 → Explanation/Reason → Example → Mini-conclusion.

P4
~50 words

Conclusion

Summarise your main points. Restate your thesis using different language. No NEW information.

Quick Criteria Reminders

Each of the four criteria carries 25% of your Task 2 score. Don't neglect any of them.

Task Response

Answer the EXACT question. Going off-topic is the most expensive mistake.

Coherence & Cohesion

Use a variety of linking devices. Don't rely only on 'firstly', 'secondly', 'finally'.

Lexical Resource

Show vocabulary range. Avoid repeating the same words - use synonyms and collocations.

Grammatical Range

Mix complex and simple sentences. Even one uncorrected grammatical error in every line caps you at Band 6.

Prioritise Task 2: If you are running out of time, it is better to have a complete Task 2 and an incomplete Task 1 than the other way around. Task 2 is worth twice as many marks.

Writing FAQs

Common questions about IELTS Writing and our AI coach.

How is the Writing score calculated?
IELTS Writing is scored on four criteria: Task Achievement (25%), Coherence & Cohesion (25%), Lexical Resource (25%), and Grammatical Range & Accuracy (25%). Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1. Our AI analyzes all four criteria and provides a detailed breakdown with specific improvement suggestions for each area.
Can I use all capital letters?
Yes, you can write in all capital letters, but it's not recommended. Writing in capitals makes it harder to show proper grammar (like capital letters at the start of sentences or for proper nouns) and can make your handwriting harder to read. It may also slow you down. We recommend using standard mixed case for the best results.
How long should my Task 2 essay be?
The minimum requirement is 250 words for Task 2. However, most high-scoring essays (Band 7+) are between 270-300 words. Writing significantly under or over this range can negatively impact your score. Our editor includes a live word counter to help you stay within the optimal range.
What's the difference between Academic and General Training Writing?
Task 2 is identical for both tests. The difference is in Task 1: Academic requires describing visual data (charts, graphs, diagrams), while General Training requires writing a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal). Our platform offers targeted practice for both modules.
How accurate is the AI scoring compared to real IELTS?
Our AI is trained on thousands of officially scored IELTS essays and maintains 90%+ accuracy within 0.5 bands of actual IELTS examiner scores. While no AI is perfect, our system provides highly reliable feedback for practice purposes and has been validated against official scoring criteria.
