What Is the IELTS Test?

IELTS measures your ability to use English across four key skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. It comes in two formats - Academic (for university admission) and General Training (for immigration and work).

Academic vs. General Training

Academic IELTS uses complex texts and assesses your readiness for higher education. General Training focuses on everyday language skills, practical tasks, and reading social texts.

Who Accepts IELTS?

Universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the US; immigration authorities like IRCC Canada and the UK Visas & Immigration; and dozens of professional bodies including the GMC, NMC, and RCPSC all accept IELTS.

2

How Is IELTS Structured?

The test consists of four sections completed in roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), and Writing (60 min) are taken in a single sitting. Speaking (11–14 min) may be on the same day or within a week.

3

How Is IELTS Scored?

Each of the four sections is scored from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user). Your Overall Band Score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5.

8-9

Band 8-9

Expert User

Fully operational command of the language. Occasional inaccuracies are non-systematic.

7

Band 7

Good User

Operational command, though with occasional inaccuracies. Can handle complex language well.

6

Band 6

Competent User

Generally effective command despite some inaccuracies. Can understand and use fairly complex language.

5

Band 5

Modest User

Partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations. Many mistakes.

1

IELTS Vocabulary Resources

A strong vocabulary is the foundation of high scores in all four IELTS sections. Focus on academic vocabulary (the Oxford 3000 and Academic Word List), collocations, and topic-specific word sets.

2

Grammar for IELTS

IELTS examiners reward grammatical range and accuracy. Key structures to master include: complex sentences with relative clauses, passive voice, conditionals, reported speech, and comparison structures.

3

Paraphrasing Skills

Paraphrasing is the ability to express the same idea using different words. It's essential for IELTS Writing (avoiding copying from the question) and for understanding Reading questions (which paraphrase the passage text).

4

Linking Words & Cohesive Devices

Using a range of cohesive devices - linking words, pronouns, synonyms, and discourse markers - is directly assessed in Writing (Coherence & Cohesion) and Speaking (Fluency & Coherence).

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about IELTS preparation and test-taking.

How do I book an IELTS test?
You can book an IELTS test through official test centers like the British Council, IDP, or through partner institutions. Visit their websites, select your preferred test date and location, create an account, and complete the registration process. You'll typically need to provide identification documents and pay the test fee during booking.
IELTS vs TOEFL: Which should I take?
IELTS is accepted by over 11,500 organizations in 140+ countries and uses British English, while TOEFL is primarily accepted in the US and uses American English. IELTS has a face-to-face speaking component, while TOEFL's speaking section is computer-recorded. Check with your target institution for their preference, as many accept both.
How long is the IELTS score valid?
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. After this period, institutions may require you to retake the test as your English proficiency may have changed. Some organizations may accept older scores depending on your circumstances, so it's worth checking with them directly.
What is a good IELTS score?
A 'good' score depends on your goals. For university admission, most institutions require Band 6.0-7.0. For immigration to countries like Canada or Australia, requirements typically range from Band 6.0-7.5 depending on the visa type. Professional registration often requires Band 7.0 or higher.
Can I retake only one section of IELTS?
Yes! With IELTS One Skill Retake, you can now retake a single component (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) if you're not satisfied with your score in that area. This option is available within 60 days of your original test and can help you achieve your target score faster.
How is IELTS Writing scored?
IELTS Writing is assessed on four criteria: Task Achievement/Response (how well you address the task), Coherence and Cohesion (organization and flow), Lexical Resource (vocabulary range and accuracy), and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Each criterion is weighted equally, and scores are averaged for your final band score.
How many IELTS practice tests should I do before the real exam?
Most IELTS experts and Cambridge Assessment English data recommend a minimum of four full-length, timed practice tests before your exam date. The key is not just doing the tests but reviewing them carefully — categorising mistakes, understanding why wrong answers were wrong, and targeting those specific weaknesses in between tests. Quality of review matters more than quantity of tests completed.
What is the difference between an IELTS mock test and a practice test?
In everyday use, the terms overlap significantly. A mock test typically means a complete, timed simulation of the real exam covering all four skills under authentic conditions. A practice test can refer to either a full simulation or a targeted section-level exercise focusing on specific question types. On Langogh, our mock tests are full-length timed simulations, while practice tests include both full-length tests and targeted skill drills.
Can I take a free IELTS practice test online?
Langogh offers a free full-length Academic IELTS mock test — no credit card required. Creating a free account also gives you access to daily practice challenges, band score tracking, and basic writing feedback. A free account takes about 60 seconds to set up.
Does doing IELTS practice tests online actually improve your score?
Yes, when done correctly. A 2021 academic study found that mock test frequency accounted for 23.4% of the variance in final IELTS band scores — one of the highest single predictors of exam performance. The critical factor is structured review: analysing wrong answers, understanding the reasoning behind correct answers, and applying that learning before your next practice session.
What IELTS practice test score means I'm ready for the real exam?
As a practical benchmark, aim to score consistently 0.5 bands above your target in at least two consecutive mock tests before booking your real exam. If your target is Band 7.0, try to reach 7.5 consistently in practice — this buffer accounts for test-day nerves and live speaking assessment unpredictability. Never book an exam date when your mock test scores are still below your actual target.

These aren't cherry-picked outliers. Across every English-speaking destination and every target band, the pattern is the same — consistent mock test practice with focused review is what moves the needle.

Target: 7.0 (PR requirement)✓ Achieved: Band 7.5Academic
I'd already taken IELTS once and got 6.5. I wasn't sure what I was doing wrong until I started doing full mock tests with AI feedback here. The Writing breakdown showed me exactly why I kept losing marks on Task Achievement — I was answering the question I expected, not the one that was actually there. Second attempt: 7.5. My Express Entry profile jumped by 40 CRS points.

Target: 6.5 each band✓ Achieved: 7.0 overallAcademic
The timed mock tests were the game changer for me. I'm a slow reader in English and I always ran out of time on Reading. Doing 60-minute timed passages every other day for a month genuinely rewired how I approach the section — I stopped reading every word and started scanning properly. Ended up with a 7.0 in Reading, which I genuinely didn't think was possible.

Target: 7.0 for nursing registration✓ Achieved: Band 7.0 ✓Academic
Nursing registration in the UK requires 7.0 in every single band — no averaging, no exceptions. Speaking was my weakest area because I had no one to practice with at home. The AI speaking simulator let me record answers at midnight and get feedback instantly. I practised Part 2 topics every single day. On test day the examiner commented on my fluency. I still can't quite believe it.

Target: 6.0 General Training✓ Achieved: Band 6.5General Training
I was working full time and had maybe 45 minutes a day to study. The daily practice challenges were perfect — short, focused, and they kept my momentum up. I did one full mock test in week 3 just to gauge where I stood, and the AI feedback told me my GT Writing Task 1 letter was too formal for the situation. I adjusted my approach and picked up half a band in Writing.

Target: 6.5 for university✓ Achieved: Band 7.0Academic
Korean education focuses a lot on reading and writing, so my academic reading was already decent. Where I really struggled was Listening Section 4 — the academic lectures with heavy vocabulary. The section practice drills here isolate exactly that question type. After three weeks of targeted Section 4 practice my accuracy went from about 55% to 82%. Finished with a 7.0 Listening.

Target: 7.5 for postgraduate✓ Achieved: Band 7.5Academic
I needed 7.5 for a master's programme in London and had failed to reach it twice before. What made the difference was using the Writing AI grader every single week — not just once before the exam. Watching my Coherence & Cohesion score improve from 6.0 to 7.5 over 10 essays gave me actual evidence that my writing was getting better. When the results came back I literally cried.
