The Three Essential Skills

Reading every word is a trap. You need these three targeted reading techniques to manage your time effectively and find answers fast.

Skimming

Read quickly to get the general idea or gist of a passage or paragraph. Don't stop for unknown words.

Scanning

Search for specific information like names, dates, or numbers without reading the entire text.

Close Reading

Analyze specific sentences once you've located the answer area to ensure a precise match.

Master All Question Types

Every question type in IELTS Reading requires a slightly different approach. From facts to opinions, we have broken down each one.

Did You Know?

IELTS Reading is designed to be impossible to finish if you read every single word. The test measures your ability to locate information, not your speed reading.

  • Vocabulary in context questions
  • Complex logical arguments (Academic)
  • Workplace & Survival texts (General Training)

Scoring System

How Reading is Calculated

Every section of the IELTS test carries different scoring weight. In Reading, your "Raw Score" (the number of marks out of 40) is converted into a band score.

Transfer Time Alert

Unlike Listening, you get zero extra time to transfer your answers. You must write them on the sheet as you go!

Master the Reading Techniques

Reading 2,500+ words in 60 minutes is impossible without a strategy. Learn how to navigate complex passages, spot traps, and find answers with surgical precision.

Skimming vs. Scanning

Skimming is for getting the general idea (gist). Scanning is for finding specific facts like names, dates, or numbers.

How to use it

"Skim the title and first paragraph. Scan for the keywords in the question."

The Keyword Technique

Identify the unique words in the question that won't be paraphrased easily (Proper nouns, unique nouns).

How to use it

"Underline these words in the question and use them as 'anchors' to locate the correct paragraph."

Parallel Expressions

IELTS is a test of synonyms. If the question says 'annually', the text will likely say 'every year'.

How to use it

"Build a 'synonym bank' in your mind. Never look for the EXACT words from the question in the text."

The Universal Reading Workflow

Follow this order for every passage to maximize your efficiency.

The 30-Second Preview

Read the title, subtitle, and glance at any diagrams. Predict what the passage is about.

Question Analysis

Read the first group of questions. Underline keywords. Identify if they follow the text order.

Targeted Search

Scan the text for your anchors. When you find the area, read slowly and carefully to confirm the answer.

Strategy: The 'Difficult Paragraph' trap

If you get stuck on a paragraph or a question for more than 90 seconds, move on. The questions are not always in order of difficulty. Don't let one hard question stop you from answering three easy ones later in the test.

Master the 60-Minute Strategy

The 15-20-25 minute rule is your roadmap to finishing all 40 questions without panic.

The 15-20-25 Rule

Passage 3 is usually more complex than Passage 1. Allocate your time accordingly: 15 mins for P1, 20 mins for P2, and 25 mins for P3.

Key Benefit

"Gives you more 'thinking time' for the most difficult section."

The 90-Second Limit

Never spend more than 90 seconds on a single question. If you can't find it, mark it, move on, and come back at the end.

Key Benefit

"Prevents you from missing easier questions later in the test."

Transfer as You Go

In the Computer-delivered test, this is automatic. In the Paper-based test, transfer your answers immediately to the sheet.

Key Benefit

"Avoids the 'panic transfer' in the final 2 minutes."

Common Mistakes to Avoid

These are the silent killers of band scores. Learn to spot them before they cost you marks.

The Word Count Trap

If the instruction says 'NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS' and you write three, the answer is dead wrong - even if the information is correct.

The Fix

"Check the word count for EVERY new group of questions. Highlight it on your screen or paper."

External Knowledge Bias

Answering based on what you know about the topic in real life, rather than what is explicitly stated in the text.

The Fix

"Remember: IELTS Reading is not a knowledge test. If it's not in the text, it's 'Not Given'."

T / F / NG vs. Y / N / NG

Writing 'True' when the question asks for 'Yes'. This can sometimes lead to zero marks for that section.

The Fix

"Look at the instructions carefully. Use the exact letters or words specified."

Spelling Counts!

In IELTS Reading, you are often required to copy words from the text. If you copy 'environment' but forget the 'n', you get 0 marks.

  • Double check plurals (s/es)
  • Watch for silent letters
  • Copy directly from text

Common Questions about IELTS Reading

Everything you need to know about the IELTS Reading test and how to prepare for it.

What is the difference between Academic and General Reading?
Academic Reading is designed for students seeking university admission or professional registration. It features three long academic texts from books, journals, and magazines. General Training Reading is for those migrating to English-speaking countries or applying for secondary education. It includes extracts from advertisements, official documents, and general texts, making it slightly easier than Academic Reading.
How is the reading band score calculated?
Your Reading band score is calculated based on the number of correct answers out of 40 questions. For Academic: 30-31 correct = Band 7, 32-34 = Band 7.5, 35-36 = Band 8. For General Training, the score ranges are slightly different. Each correct answer counts as one mark, and there's no penalty for wrong answers.
Can I retake just the Reading section?
Yes! IELTS One Skill Retake allows you to retake just the Reading section if you're happy with your scores in the other three skills. This feature is available at select test centers and can save you time and money compared to retaking the full exam.
How long is the IELTS Reading test?
The IELTS Reading test is 60 minutes long for both Academic and General Training versions. You'll need to read passages and answer 40 questions within this time. There's no extra time given for transferring answers in the computer-delivered test.
What are the most difficult question types in IELTS Reading?
Many test takers find True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings to be the most challenging. T/F/NG requires precise distinction between what the text says vs. what's assumed. Matching Headings tests your ability to identify main ideas quickly. Our AI-powered drills target these specific question types to boost your score.
How can I improve my reading speed for IELTS?
Practice skimming (reading for main ideas) and scanning (searching for specific information). Use our timed practice tests to build speed under exam conditions. The AI highlighting feature helps you identify key phrases faster. Most importantly, practice regularly with authentic IELTS passages.
