Conquer Every Question Type

From marking maps to completing forms, IELTS Listening tests your ability to focus under pressure.

Watch Out for Distractors!

Distractors are information that seems like the answer but is later corrected or changed. For example:

"I can meet you at 4:30 PM. Oh, wait, I just remembered I have a class. Let's make it 5:15 PM instead."

Strategy: Don't write the first answer you hear immediately. Keep listening for corrections or modifications.

Scoring System

Precision is Everything

Unlike Speaking or Writing, Listening scores are based on objective raw marks. A single misspelled word or wrong plural can drop your score by 0.5 band.

Case Sensitivity

You can write your answers in all CAPITAL LETTERS or lower case. Most examiners recommend ALL CAPS to avoid handwriting issues.

Core IELTS Listening Strategies

Master the key techniques that top scorers use to maximize their band score.

The Prediction Strategy

Use the 30-45 seconds before the audio starts to read the questions and predict the type of information needed (Name, Date, Number, Adjective).

Impact on Score

"Reduces cognitive load and helps you spot the answer instantly when it's spoken."

Signpost Word Identification

Listen for words like 'however', 'finally', 'moving on to', or 'actually'. These signals indicate that the speaker is changing topic or correcting an earlier statement.

Impact on Score

"Prevents you from falling for distractors (traps)."

Multi-Tasking mastery

Train yourself to listen to the current answer while reading the next two questions simultaneously.

Impact on Score

"Ensures you don't get 'lost' in the audio if you miss one answer."

The Universal Listening Workflow

Follow these 4 steps for every section to ensure 100% accuracy.

1

Predict

Read the questions. Guess the grammar (noun/verb) and topic.

2

Listen & Note

Write the answers as you hear them. Don't worry about spelling yet.

3

Verify

Check if the answer makes sense in the context of the sentence.

4

Transfer

Double-check spelling and plural 's' during the transfer time.

Master Strategy: The 'Parallel Thinking'

Always be looking at the next question even while waiting for the answer to the current one. If you hear the information for the next question, it means you missed the current one-let it go immediately and focus on what's coming next.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about the IELTS Listening test.

Is listening different for Academic and General IELTS?
No, the Listening test is exactly the same for both Academic and General Training IELTS. All test takers complete the same 4 sections with 40 questions. The test lasts approximately 30 minutes, plus transfer time to write answers on the answer sheet.
Do I get 10 minutes transfer time on the computer test?
Important: No, on the computer-delivered IELTS (CD-IELTS), you only get 2 minutes at the end to check your answers. There is no separate transfer time because you type your answers directly into the computer as you listen. This is a crucial difference from the paper-based test which gives 10 minutes transfer time.
How many times is the audio played?
The audio is played only ONCE. You cannot pause, rewind, or replay any part of the recording. This is why practicing with authentic timing is essential - you need to train your listening skills to catch information the first time.
What accents are used in the IELTS Listening test?
The IELTS Listening test features a variety of native English accents including British (UK), Australian, American, and occasionally Canadian and New Zealand accents. This reflects the international nature of the test and ensures candidates can understand different varieties of English.
How is the listening band score calculated?
Your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band score from 1-9. For example: 39-40 correct = Band 9, 37-38 = Band 8.5, 35-36 = Band 8, 32-34 = Band 7.5, 30-31 = Band 7, and so on. Each correct answer is worth 1 mark with no penalty for wrong answers.
