How Human Raters Score Writing & Speaking

Unlike Reading and Listening which are multiple-choice and auto-scored by the computer, the Writing and Speaking tasks in CELPIP are evaluated by trained raters based on four specific Performance Standards.

Content / Coherence

How well your ideas are organized and developed. Includes the quality of ideas, logical flow, formatting, and how well you guide the reader or listener through your answer.

Vocabulary

The range and precision of your word choice. Using natural-sounding idioms, diverse adjectives, and academic vocabulary rather than repeating simple words will elevate this score.

Readability / Listenability

Focuses on grammar, sentence variety, punctuation in writing, and pronunciation/rhythm in speaking. Are your sentences complex and varied? Are errors distracting?

Task Fulfillment

Did you answer all parts of the prompt? Is your tone appropriate for the audience (e.g., formal vs. informal)? Is your answer within the specified time or word limit?

Why CLB 9 is the Magic Number for Express Entry

Language proficiency is the most controllable and high-yielding category in the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Reaching CLB 9 triggers a significant boost known as the Skill Transferability factor.

Jumping from CLB 8 to CLB 9 across all four skills can increase your total CRS score by 50 to 100 points, often making the difference between waiting in the pool forever or receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

CLB 7 gives you 64 Points total

This is the minimum requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker program.

CLB 9 gives you 116+ Points total

Unlocks maximum skill transferability points when combined with a post-secondary degree.

Expert Tips to Score CLB 9+ in CELPIP

Hitting the target CLB 9 requires strategy above just good English. Use these tips during your test.

Writing: Structure Over Complexity

  • In Task 1 (Email), explicitly state your purpose in the first sentence.
  • In Task 2 (Survey), use sophisticated conjunctions (Moreover, Consequently, On the contrary) instead of just "And/But/So".
  • Readability drops drastically if you make grammar mistakes while trying to sound complex. Simpler, error-free sentences score higher than complex, broken ones.

Speaking: Time Management Factor

  • Speak clearly into the mic and keep an eye on the progress bar. Finishing 15 seconds early looks bad for Task Fulfillment.
  • Use the short preparation time (usually 30-60s) to jot down 3 keywords you want to hit, instead of full sentences.
  • Vary your tone. A monotonous robotic voice damages your "Listenability" score. Show emotion appropriate to the prompt (apologetic, excited, confused).

CELPIP Scoring Frequently Asked Questions

Clear up any remaining confusion about the CELPIP tests and scores.

How is the CELPIP score calculated?
Each CELPIP section (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) is scored independently on the 1–12 CLB scale. There is no single 'overall' CELPIP score — each section produces a separate CLB level. When submitting to IRCC for immigration, each section's CLB level is reported individually. Your Writing score is the average of Task 1 and Task 2 subscores. Your Speaking score is the average of all 8 task scores.
How many questions do I need to get right to achieve CLB 9 in CELPIP?
To achieve CLB 9 in the Listening and Reading sections, you typically need to get about 31 to 33 out of the 38 scored questions right. Since test difficulty can slightly vary, always aim for at least 33 correct answers to guarantee a CLB 9 or higher.
What is the difference between CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS?
CELPIP-General tests all 4 skills (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) and is accepted for Canadian immigration (Express Entry, PNPs) and citizenship applications. CELPIP-General LS tests only Listening and Speaking and is accepted for citizenship purposes only. If you're applying for Express Entry or a PNP, you must take the full CELPIP-General test — the LS version is not accepted.
How does CELPIP scoring relate to CLB levels?
CELPIP levels and CLB levels have a direct 1:1 correspondence. CELPIP Level 10 = CLB 10, CELPIP Level 7 = CLB 7, etc. This makes CELPIP uniquely transparent for immigration purposes — your CELPIP score directly tells you your Canadian Language Benchmark level, which is what IRCC uses to assess language proficiency for all programs.
How long are CELPIP scores valid?
CELPIP scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. IRCC requires a valid test result at the time of your application submission. If your results expire before you submit your application, you must retake the test. You cannot retake individual sections — the entire test must be repeated.
Can I submit CELPIP scores for multiple immigration programs?
Yes. You can use the same valid CELPIP test result for multiple applications and programs simultaneously — provided the scores meet each program's minimum requirement. CELPIP results are sent directly to IRCC and can be shared with provincial immigration offices for PNP applications. One test, multiple program uses is a key advantage of CELPIP.
